I've heard this one three times already this week. While there are some unfortunate enough to have legitimate medical conditions that excuse them from exercise, these are very rare cases and bad knees are usually just a smokescreen for laziness.
The truth is most people have joint problems and aches and pain because the are physically inactive and have been for many years (pain due to poor exercise form is a topic I shall cover in the future- but always keep the tension on the muscles).
Yes the muscles have become short and weak and are no longer able to support an individuals sometimes considerable weight. Solution- strengthen and lengthen the muscles. Easy. I have had clients come to me with bad knees, ankles, backs, shoulders and have always been able to find a way to work around any problem with the correct exercise choice and technique. These people are determined- they will not beaten and don't give up, and are inspirational with their attitude to life.
Anyone with a modicum of self respect would find a way forward- yet some people seem to almost relish their weaknesses. Maybe they think the fat fairy will appear and make everything alright again.
So find someone knowledgeable and qualified in matters of exercise and rehabilitation and let them show you exercises that will help and prevent further irritation to a problem area. You will most likely find that in time the pain will disappear. You may even be running marathons before you know it!
